Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE

Madison Gas and Electric Company (MGE) is seeking a highly motivated and analytically minded Generation Planning Analyst in our Energy Planning group. This key role will ensure MGE’s resource adequacy, shaping our electric generation portfolio to achieve our near- and long-term goals for affordability and reliability, including our commitment to 80% CO2 reduction by 2030 and net-zero by 2050.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Creates and maintains long-term generation and transmission system models capable of providing timely alternatives for efficient, economical, and reliable planning and operation of the Company’s generation assets.
  • Analyzes the economic and technical feasibility of various generation portfolio options to achieve optimal plans in the face of uncertain regulatory, environmental, and economic future conditions.
  • Coordinates project applications and resource plan submittals to regulatory agencies, including drafting language and providing testimony.
  • Prepares and presents technical reports and studies for departments throughout the Company pertaining to power supply plans and/or power production facilities.
  • Represents the Company on industry committees, task forces, and stakeholder groups, as assigned.
  • Maintains awareness and understanding of existing and emerging technologies and regulatory issues that may affect the economics and cost competitiveness of the Company’s electric resource portfolio.
  • Assists in the analysis and planning of regional transmission infrastructure as it affects MGE’s generation planning and operation.
  • Actively collaborates with external stakeholders, utilities, regulatory bodies, and industry partners.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, business, math, economics, or equivalent from an accredited university.
  • Preferred a minimum of two years of experience in utility long-term generation/power supply planning, including the application of electric generation planning techniques.
  • Preferred experience in at least one major regulatory proceeding providing and successfully defending analyses and testimony in support of utility generation plans, additions, or changes.
  • Good verbal and written skills required.
  • Knowledge of technical concepts, principles, and data analysis techniques required to solve and analyze power supply options.
  • Strong understanding on power system analysis and techniques.
  • Knowledge of other modeling applications such as PLEXOS, PROMOD for nodal transmission modeling, Electric Generation Expansion Analysis Software (EGEAS), Siemens PSS/E, Aurora energy forecasting software, and PowerWorld software is beneficial.
  • Proficiency with programming languages as well as data analysis and manipulation (Excel VBA, Python, R, PowerBI, etc.) preferred.
  • Knowledge of Midwest ISO rules and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals and methods used in performing economic analyses relating to electric utility investment decisions.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic understanding of the review and approval processes and environmental permitting requirements established by state and federal regulatory agencies related to electric generation.
